Deliberate Living & Travel Blog

Lauren Smith

My journey began in the mountains of Rossland, BC. I worked hard away from the area for my youth establishing my career in communications, coming back for a fantastic job that unfortunately I had to leave in 2024 when I was diagnosed with melanoma which became metastatic and incurable in September of that year.

Having moved back to the Kootenays, the pace of life is slower and things like travel are harder to do. My illness is one of slow progression now, and given that when I am on treatment, it's just pills, that offers me a lot of flexibility to travel and see the world around me.

Since my diagnosis, I have found myself navigating a  path that is more resilient than fragile.  This blog is a testament to that journey —a collection of memories of the places we go and the travel I've done since my diagnosis.

I also want to use this space to plan future travels. I'm hoping to build a community of people who face life struggles including cancer, but are also finding resilience in the options they still have at their fingertips. I hope to inspire others to travel and see the world.

Appreciation for the present

My philosophy is rooted in the belief that every moment can be imbued with potential, luck, and significance. In the face of an incurable illness, I have found that the most profound experiences are those when I'm able to be present. I do not seek to escape the reality of my condition, but to embrace the good that still remains. By focusing on the future and making plans, I am able to find a sense of purpose. This is not just reflections on travel, but a celebration of where I've been and where I'm going. I hope to inspire others with my story.
